I had the pleasure of photographing the engagement of Ryan and Dewi in Santa Monica on July 16, 2009. The theme of the engagement was created towards a fun day in Santa Monica pier. I have only been to Santa Monica Pier twice this year and found myself intrigued by the place. I wanted to do a little bit of different styles and vision for this particular photos, where I created a little bit of vintage look and contemporary, incorporating a journalistic approach to photography. In the end, I had a blast taking picture of them. So, congrats Ryan/Dewi for your upcoming wedding :)

MOVING TO L.A - JUNE 1ST 2009

In one week from today, I'll be moving out to L.A from Denver. To recap: We put the house in the market for sale on April 17th and under contract within 2.5 weeks on May 5th, 2009. Since then my life has been on a full throttle non - stop busy! Started from scouting an apartment in L.A to packing up all of our stuff, touching up walls with trials and error, and to finally loading up our 4 bedroom home into a 16 x 8 ft container, which still does not fit all of our stuff.

This could be one of the most stressful event in our life. I had to downsized so much stuff to be able to fit into our container. There has been so much little annoying details that needed to takes place before closing the house. One week from today, I'll be fine, cause one week from today, I'll be in L.A!!!

Latest Updates: House for Sale, Etc!!

I finally put the house in the market for sale since last Friday April 17th, 2009. Its only been in the market for a little over a week. There has been a quiet of bit of showings since, along with some people expressing an interest on the house. Right now, it's just a matter of time. Hopefully soon!

One might wonder the reasoning behind the house selling? For the past two years I have been contemplating to move out of Denver. Not because Denver is a bad city, indeed far from it. Its simply a desire to live in a bigger city, while also pursuing my photography and a new career in web design/interactive media (will be attending A.I Hollywood). I always felt Denver is kind of a transition place for me, even though I have lived here for the past 10.5 years. Truthfully, Denver already feels home to me. These process hasn't been easy either. The choice has been between NYC or L.A. Countless hours have spend in weighting the pros and cons, even visiting both places. In the end, I choose L.A.

This is going to be a new chapter of my life. An adventure and a challenge and I am really excited! I know Its not going to be easy and there will be lifestyle adjustment but I also have faith that when I follow the Lord, He will lead!

Trevor and Mary's Wedding // December 24th, 2008

I photographed the wedding of Trevor and Mary on Christmas eve, 2008 in Family Reunion cabin at YMCA, Estes Park, CO. It was the smallest wedding that I ever shot, consist of only Mary's side of the families: 8 adults and 15 kids. It was done on last minute term. A friend of mine from college, Joel Dennis called me out of the blue the day before I left for Kansas City to visit Jen's family for Christmas. Initially I wasn't sure if I were able to do it, but it worked out in the end.

The wedding ceremony was very informal and its really refreshing being able to photograph a wedding in a purely candid way. No details of precession nor do I need to stand in the back. The bright light from outside was a great help for me of being able to capture in creative ways. Not much strobes needed.

MAMIYA DIGITAL BACK...

My folks had a Mamiya RB67 PRO SD medium format camera that they gave me last year. I never had the chance to play around much due to films (I know...I'm too lazy with films, I'm more of a digital guy). Then today I was browsing Mamiya's website and back in April, 2008 Mamiya had announced the launched of Digital Back compatible with the Mamiya RB67 PRO SD. Which gave me hope in terms of camera investment...cause its way less ( click here ) than buying full digital medium format such as HASSELBLAD.

I've been playing around a bit with rain, starts, and snow effect, mainly using photoshop brush, and blurring treatment to create more realistic effect. The very top image was taken from my wife's aunt apartments at LAKE POINT TOWER. Its pretty sick view...Its not perfect yet but here is the work in progress thus far...

I have been into vintage look recently. The photo was taken at Billie Creek Village, Indiana. Its really fascinating place...Billie Creek its a recreate village that tries to mimic community in the late 1700's - 1800...with real houses, church, and schools that was built during that time period.

The concept was simply to make Honda be the focal with more interesting background rather than Home depot. I thought the rim light was perfect for the background...I couldn't quiet mimic the back windshield and the left window with the background. So I used gausian blurred, to make it somewhat realistic...The very bottom image is the final piece. I shot the car two years ago actually, and the background was shot from my last NYC trip. Feedback are welcome...Thanks.

Portfolio Development 1: Smart Water Ad

Hi there, its been a month since I got back to blogging. A lot have happened in the month of August with my photography venture. From Assisting, working on photo essay documenting the life of street kids in Denver, travel to LA, portraiture, to continue developing my commercial portfolio.

I just finished creating a series of ad that caters to smart water or hopefully could apply with other water co. Its a personal commercial work that I am trying to develop. It should have a total of 4 images to convey the story of the ad. The story should evolved from a man lost in the desert desperately thirsty, found water bottles in the middle of nowhere, the man poked the bottle to drink the water, then turned happy and radiant face.

I posted 6 images with 4 of similar images. I am trying to decide whether to use images number 2 with the water in the distance vs 3 with water closer to the surface OR 4 with rectangle cropping vs 5 square cropping, is that make sense? So any feedback are welcome...

I'll be posting more updates with photo essay work, hopefully on mid September...so stay tuned.

Things I learned from Photography Assisting Work

In the month of June - July, I got to assist a good variety of commercial/editorial photographers here in Denver, CO. They are the best in their respective areas. The following are some of the things I learned...

First with John Johnston Photography where I got to assist him on location, shooting for Inc and Forbes magazine. John Johnston is an editorial and commercial photographer whom have done lots of work for New Belgium Brewery as well as top magazine out there - ink, forbes, and people magazine. John was very enjoyable to work for, easy to approach, and very insightful in words and practically of thing. I Learned a lot from him in terms of the way he communicate to his clients. When it comes to photo shooting on location is to expect the unexpected because you never know. John will go the extra miles to make a photo shoot perfect and nicely done.

Secondly I got to assist with Mccory James photography for his personal portfolio development. Mccory is an architectural, commercial, and a wedding photographer. Mccory is one of those rare photographers out there that's able to pull different areas of photography and making it work in terms of business as well as good quality photography. Its an honor for me to be able to assist him. I learned some insightful things just from having a discussiong with him. Essentially to get where you want to be you have to be willing to take each opportunity as a ticket to your destination, methaporically speaking. In other words, since I wanted to do commercial photography that I ought to be less picky when there is an opportunity to shoot for weddings.

Thirdly, I got to assist with Todd Langley photography. He is a location and lifestyle photographer who does variety work for sports celebrity, sporting companies, to fashion photography. I got to assist for him recently up in Loveland Pass, Colorado shooting for Dick's Sporting Good. The most insightful things I learned from him was on the practically aspect of things. Things such as the importance communication (esp between clients), what it takes to make photo production work // assistants, locations scouter, models, make up/wardrobe stylist. RV, etc and go an extra 110 miles to make the photo shoot perfect even though it's hard process.

I felt grateful for each and every opportunity and click here to see each photographer's website...

TRIP TO NYC: JULY 13TH - JULY18TH, 2008

My wife, My 18th month old son, and I got to go to travel to NYC this summer for 6 days and 5 nights. Mainly for family vacation and to attend the gallery exhibit (see the next blog). We stayed in the Upper West Area for the first three nights and the remaining days we stayed at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on 42nd st and Park Ave (I was fortunate enough to be able to redeem my hotels points to stay at Hyatt hotel).

This is the second time we travel to NYC since last year, except this year we got travel to Brooklyn. We loveeee Brooklyn. We were fortunate enough to have a friend who lives in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn who was able to show us around for one full day. Brooklyn to us felt more livable than Manhattan with less hustle and bustle but still a very diverse neighborhood and lots of options for things to do, restaurants, shopping as such...

The bottom line is our experience of NYC, whether that'd be Brooklyn or Manhattan has been nothing but full of life and adventures: The long walk and yet enjoyable, The hustle and bustle, continues amazement of looking the skyscrapers, the old architectures, the overwhelmingly good restaurants, the easy commute, and the level of diversity are what makes NYC very unique and exciting to us...We will always go back to visit at some point in our lives.

GALLERY EXHIBITION BY ASMP NY IN NYC

The opening for the gallery exhibition took place on July 17th, 2008, hosted by ASMP NY Chapter at Fastback Creative Books in Chelsea, NYC.
I got to meet with other winners and had a nice conversations about each others background and where they at in their careers and I felt honor to be chosen first place among other very talented photographers. PDN (Photo District News) will publish sometime this fall.

Photography Assisting + Dick's Sporting Good

Last Sunday, June 29th - July 1st, 2008 I got to assist Denver commercial photographer, Todd Langley up in Loveland Pass, Colorado. It was a catalog photo production done for Dick's Sporting Good. There was a total of 8 models from Maximum agency. There were all photograph in pair. We got to stay at a nice hotel called Tivoli Lodge up in Vail, CO by Vail Village.

I seriously never hiked so much in my whole life and I have lived in Denver for almost 10 years. Go figured...Nevertheless it was one adventure experience I have so far and I am learning a lot just from those three days.

Kurt Brown, my client needed a headshot for online dating. I thought its best to used a simple gray background, with three strobes, to give a more clear lightings. I had to do little bit of work in post photo production; spotting all the skin imperfections and color correcting the image. I thought it came out pretty good. This was taken on June 1st, 2008 at Grant's house (the guy on the left). Initially he wanted just a formal pictures of him and the son, showing the logo on their shirt. I thought proposed more fun pictures, instead of just the formal one. The black and white turns out pretty good as well. Its not to bad and I had fun too...

I submitted this picture back in April, 2008 for an ASMP Image 08 + photo contest. This piece in particular was a collaboration between make up artist, Katelyn Simskins and I. Initially was in gray background, but it progress into a smoother look converting it into black and white. Then two weeks ago, I was announced that I won the first place for ASMP photo contest in NYC. I was thrilled and surprised simultaneously. They're having an exhibition in NYC gallery on July 17th, 2008 for all the winners along with other prizes + significant exposures. I felt grateful at the moment for the opportunity...

I spent time in Breckenridge and lake dillon, CO this past memorial day weekend with my family and friends. It was the gateway that I needed after long exhausted a couple of weeks trying to find the right job. The apartment that we stayed located in the prime location, overlooking the town and the mountains, not to mention the all sunny weather throughout the weekend. The town was charming, the restaurants were good, and the ambiance was very inviting. I love everything about it.
